BELIEFS
How to create the transformation you imagine? How does therapy work?
Therapy or counselling can happen in just a few sessions or can take a while longer depending on what brings you in and what you want to accomplish. Sometimes it is only a matter of having an independent eye on the situation or personal strategies and gaining a few new tools, while at other times more is needed. And this is defined before getting started in a conversation about what is possible and how to attain it. A safe cooperative environment is crucial. That safe environment makes it possible to be in the present, being mindful of feelings, thoughts, images. From there positive change is possible. Small or large it is a personal choice. Values can be explored and the choices made evaluated in respect to our personal vision. Most decide to see a psychologist after trying to fix things themselves for a while. Finding new solutions may be easier than initially anticipated when looked at together. Awareness and insight can lead to right action. Right action for us given our life purpose.
Exploring what feelings are based on, what may have helped create them and kept them alive, sometimes for decades, beyond their original usefulness. Accepting their contributions to the life we know and learn to go beyond their influence by acnowledging their power. Learning to choose daily , to create new habits and foster small changes into larger goals for transformation. Respecting our body as well as our mind as both are connected and change can occurr in both. Taking reasonable risks in this journey is expected, small steps to greater strength. This journey is different for each person, even with similar issues, and we learn to trust our inner compass to guide us to our own truth. Freedom to choose expands our world, increase our self-confidence; fear recedes. How long this takes varies from person to person? Even small gains can transform resignation into action in a few sessions. We realize that some problems are amenable to discovery and change while others call for developing acceptance and a new relationship to the issue. This process works best when we both agree on goals and check in as to "how it is going" every few sessions. My job is to respect the inner strength and resources you already have, the values and goals you bring to the sessions and assist in developing those in a way that you feel purposeful, content and in harmony with your life. |

In
therapy, we learn to pay close attention to how we feel, think, and
respond to the world and other people. Doing this helps us to see
where our resources and strengths are, and where we are living out
old belief patterns that no longer serve us. Some of the work
in session feels like work, some of the time it does not.
Some the work occurs between sessions while engaging in daily
living, with new insights and awareness, and trying out new
behaviours and self care strategies. There are risks associated with engaging in self-transformation; meeting feelings that have been identified before, seeing life choices in a different light, coming to the realization that living out our values requires a change in priorities. Trying out new behaviours can lack smoothness and bring self consciousness. And having expectations that are not met. As in life, there are no guarantees of a planned outcome. Transformation may take time, and lead to new unexplored, unheard off paths. One of my goals is to stay in touch with how the process is going from the client's side. People come to therapy /counselling voluntarily and have the power to leave whenever they wish, and need be empowered to have their wishes respected as to the course of treatment. Talking and keeping in touch about this is part of the process. |
